Introduction

The municipality of Alcolea del Rio (3,370 inhabitants in 2008; 5,002 ha) is located 50 km north-east of Seville.

An old Roman settlement, Alcolea was known in the Moorish times as Al- Koliah, "The Small Fortress"; the fortress was used by King Ferdinand III the Saint as an outpost during the reconquest of Seville. Once reconquered, the village was transferred to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.
