Introduction

The municipality of El Guijo (408 inhabitants in 2008; 6,728 ha) is located in the valley of Los Pedroches, 100 km north of Córdoba, on the borders with Extremadura and Castile-La Manca.

El Guijo emerged in the 14th century as a hamlet of Pedroche. All the villages of the valley were granted to the Marquis of El Carpio in the late 16th century and retroceded to the Kingdom of Spain in 1747.

Coat of Arms

According to the municipal website, the adoption process of the new coat of arms started in 2002, to replace the previous one that had never been officially approved. The coat of arms is based on the arms of the Marquisate of La Guardia, "Per pale, 1. Or three fesses azure (Mesía), 2. Gules a castle or (Carillo), a border checky azure and argent (Toledo)." The two quarters charged with a bull represents cattle breeding, the main source of income of the village.
