Selnica is a community in the Medimurje County some 15 km
north-west of Cakovec. Population
about 3,500, the main town of the same name has 1,100
inhabitants. As is the case with several other community in
Medimurje, there are slightly more Roma living there (over 4%)
then in the rest of Croatia.
The coat of arms of Selnica is azure a lion winged passant or
holding with front paws an open book inscribed 1334. The emblem
symbolizes the patron of the community St. Mark. The date refers
to the year when the parish was established.
The area is in northermost parts of Croatia and was once ruled by
Hungary, it is far from away the coast. I have no doubt that the
only common thing with Venice is that
they share the same patron saint...
The flag is blue with the yellow bordered coat of arms in the
middle (to be confirmed, but most probably from the partial
picture in the source).
These symbols were designed by Danijel Hampamer, who designed
several other communal symbols in the Medimurje County. According
to the first article below, the symbols were adopted in June 2004
and according to the other, they were first used publicly on 23
April 2005 on the St. Mark's Day celebration in Selnica.
