Overview

Cakovec is the capital city of Medjimurje county. The coat of arms is "Azure issuant from base a Massoned Wall embatteled and with a Tower Argent between two Mullets Or". The coat of arms is canting, as the most probable origin of the name Chaktornya is Csaky's Tower, after the count Dimitry Csaky, high magistrate and palatine on the court of king Bela IV (14th century). The flag is blue with the coat of arms outlined in white set in the middle.

The coat of arms of Cakovec is actually the family arms of Ernusth de Csáktornya, lords of Cakovec from 15th century. In 16th century the family, its estates and also the coat of arms was inherited by the Zrinski family, who marshalled the coat of arms in their own.

The web site of the city includes a new decision on the coat of arms: Odluka o grbu Grada Cakovca, 09.07.2009, Službeni glasnik Grada Cakovca, br. 9/2009, 10.07.2009.
This decision supersedes the decision of 1993: Odluka o grbu Grada Cakovca, Službeni glasnik Medimurske županije, broj 3/93 and Službeni glasnik Grada Cakovca, broj 3/96. However, neither of the two official gazettes are on line for these old issues.
Newvertheless, I believe that nothing substantial was changed in the 2009 decision. It includes drawing of the coat of arms: (but not the flag - it mentions only that the identical coat of arms: is used on the flag), but this same drawing is available in vectorized format in previous issues of the gazette (the 2009 gazette uses a crude and incorrect coat of arms:, at least following this decision), e.g. here.
The same issue of the official gazette includes the new Statutes, that include the description of both coat of arms and the flag, where the flag is simply described as blue with the coat of arms in the middle. It does not specify the border around the coat of arms, but until now a white border was always used and is probably so today as well.
For the time being, I would leave my previous drawings as the 1993-2009 coat of arms and flag, although they may just have been the same as the current ones.
Ströhl in his 1904 book shows almost to the line identical drawing. Laszowski (Grbovi Jugoslavije, 1936) shows is slightly different, adding red roofs above the embattlelemnts on each side of the tower. He also mentions that the coat of arms is based on the 1596 seal.

Hungarian Flag of Csáktornya

image by Antonio Martins, 28 Febuary 2001

This flag of Csáktornya (now Cakovec Town, Medzimurje Co., Croatia) is from Dr. Széll Sándor: Városaink neve, címere és lobogója (1941) as "Csáktornya, Zala Co. (H)". The flag is blue and white vertical diband.

In April 1941 Hungary occupied and in December annexed Cakovec. In April 1945 it lost it. The Treaty of Paris (1947) reallocated it to Yugoslavia.
