Introduction

The municipality of Fuente Vaqueros (4,211 inhabitants in 2007; 1,600 ha) is located 17 km west of Granada. Fuente Vaqueros is the birthplace of the poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936), and is, accordingly, the self-styled "cradle of universal poetry." The poet wrote about Fuente Vaqueros:

"In this village I had my first dream of distance. In this town I will be earth and flowers."

Lorca's birth house has been transformed into a museum and his birthday is celebrated in the village every 5 June. Lorca is also celebrated each year by two theater festivals (International Festival of Universitary Theater, May, and Autumn People's Theater Festival, October).

Description

The flag and arms of Fuente Vaqueros were approved by the Municipal Council on 29 July 2005 and submitted on 10 November 2005 to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed them by Decree on 22 November 2005, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 236 on 5 December 2005.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following:

Coat of arms: Shield divided per fess the upper half divided per pale. 1. Vert a sheaf of three wheat spikes or. 2. Argent a pomegranate proper, faceted gules, slipped and leaved of two leaves vert. 3. Azure a two- piped [canting] fountain or. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

Flag: Rectangular flag in proportions 2:3, made of three equal horizontal stripes, the upper red, the lower green and the central white reaching the hoist from 1/6 of the length. Centered over all, the municipal coat of arms.

The symbols should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with their official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not apprended to the Decree).

According to Mayor Aurelio Torres ("Granada Digital," 30 Dec 2005), the new coat of arms is a slightly modified version of the coat of arms previously used by the Municipal Council. The coat of arms includes three stalks or, a pomegranate proper and a fountain with two pipes or, with slight modifications in their design, and a modified background, vert, argent and azure.

The real flag, shown beside the Mayor on the municipal website, has the coat of arms not "over all," at least in its upper part: the cross of the crown does not reach the red field.

Wikipedia shows the flag with the coat of arms slightly over all. Some Wikipedia pages (English, French, Bahasa Indonesia, Portuguese, Russian...) show the flag without the white triangle along the hoist; the mistake is most probably due to the incomplete description of the flag (the triangle omitted) in "Granada Digital."
