Introduction

The municipality of Ferreira (345 inhabitants in 2008; 4,314 ha) is located at the base of Sierra Nevada, 75 km east of Granada.

Probably named after iron deposits, the place was mentioned in the 12th century by the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi as a fortified place. Reconquested in 1489 by the Catholic Kings, Ferreira was a Morisco stronghold during the Alpujarra revolt (late 16th century); the revolted Moriscos were eventually expelled from Spain in 1586 and the area resettled by Christian colonists from all over Spain.
