Administrative reshuffle 2008

The "Kreisreform Sachsen 2008" (or "Kreisgebietsreform 2008" / administrative reclassification of Saxony in 2008) is a law in Saxony, Germany, coming into effect on August 1, 2008, which outlines a reform of the counties of Saxony. It reduces the rural counties from 22 to 10. The number of urban counties will be reduced from 7 to 3.
Ten new counties are created by amalgamating existing counties, while the urban counties of Chemnitz, Dresden and City of Leipzig are untouched.
The political-administrative structure in Saxony results in the following counties:

Bautzen - The district was established in 1994 by merging the former counties of Bautzen and Bischofswerda. The county of Kamenz and the county-free city Hoyerswerda were merged into the county.

Erzgebirgskreis - The county was established by merging the former counties of Annaberg(-Buchholz), Aue-Schwarzenberg, Stollberg and Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis.

Görlitz - The county was established by merging the former counties of Löbau-Zittau and Niederschlesischer Oberlausitzkreis and the urban county Görlitz.

Leipzig (urban county) - The county was established by merging the former counties Muldentalkreis and Leipziger Land.

Meißen - In the administrative reform of 1952, several municipalities were transferred to the counties of Freiberg and Döbeln. In 1990, the old county borders were restored, and in 1996 parts of the county Dresden-Land were added. In August 2008 the county of Riesa-Großenhain was added to the county to give it its current size.

Mittelsachsen - The district was established by merging the former districts of Döbeln, Freiberg and Mittweida.

Nordsachsen - The county was established by merging the former counties of Delitzsch and Torgau-Oschatz .

Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge - The county was established by merging the former counties of Sächsische Schweiz and Weißeritzkreis .

Vogtlandkreis - The Vogtlandkreis is a Landkreis (rural county) in the southwest of the Free State of Saxony, at the borders to Thuringia, Bavaria, and the Czech Republic. Neighbouring counties are (from south clockwise) Hof, Saale-Orla, Greiz, Zwickau and Erzgebirgskreis. Plauen is the administrative center of the county. 1952 the East German government with the big administrative reform renamed them to Kreise (counties), and created the new counties Klingenthal and Reichenbach by decreasing the size of the previous ones. After the German Reunification the changes of the 1952 reform were mostly undone, and in 1996 the 5 counties were merged to form the Vogtlandkreis. In the county reform of August 1, 2008 the town of Plauen was included into the district.

Zwickau - The county was established by merging the former counties Zwickauer Land, Chemnitzer Land and the urban county Zwickau.

In the future days I will be about the new flag and coat of arms report. The search for new symbols in Saxony has begun. The first adoptions of new county symbols have been reported.

County-Free City Flags / Flaggen kreisfreier Städte

There are seven county-free cities (Kreisfreie Städte) in Saxony. I managed to find flags for four of them: Chemnitz, Dresden, Leipzig and Plauen. Falko Schmidt was kind enough to send me descriptions for the others: Görlitz, Hoyerswerda and Zwickau. The names of the municipalities contain a number of spelling mistakes, and some have become renamed or incorporated into other municipalities. This is a list of corrections/updates:

  • Annaberg: incorporated into Annaberg-Buchholz
  • Bärenstein: there are three locations with this name in Saxony, one of them is a city, Bärenstein im Osterzgebirge in the county Weißeritzkreis.
  • Bergiebrubel: I can only guess that this means Berggießhübel, a town which has become incorporated into Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel.
  • Brand: there are several of these: Brand bei Zwickau (part of Zwickau), Brand-Erbisdorf (town near Chemnitz) and Brand bei Hohnstein (part of Hohnstein).
  • Geising: the words nachwishar seit should read nachweisbar seit, meaning 'verifiable since'
  • Gottleuba: now part of Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel
  • Johlstadt: probably Jöhstadt (?)
  • Lauenstein: now part of Geising
  • Limbach: now part of Limbach-Oberfrohna
  • Neustadt: ambiguous, there are at least two towns of this name in Saxony: Neustadt in Sachsen, and Neustadt im Vogtland
  • Schandau: renamed to Bad Schandau
  • Tralheim: probably Thalheim is meant?
  • Wehlen: complete name Stadt Wehlen
  • Zoblitz: now part of Reichenbach/OL
