From City History Page:
This original flag design depicts the classic Athenian laurel wreath, hearkening back to our roots. The risen sun echoes the scene at Sugarloaf Mountain used in the Great Seal of Ohio and also, the initial letter or our State's name. Green, white and gold are recurring colors seen in Ohio University and the Athens City School District, honoring our long standing commitment to the pursuit of education. Also, these are the colors that clothe the rolling hills our forbearers chose for their new home. The year boasts the founding date or our historic community and stands as testimony to our continued commitment to this way of life. Special care was taken to render a simple, crisp graphic which can be easily reproduced; one that is memorable and hopefully timeless.Submitted by:Dov Gutterman, 10 April 1999
