This green flag shows symbols from the local economy, a mill, railroad engine, bicycle, coal car and wheat. A cap and diploma remind us of education and Ohio University. The county seal in the center is circled by fourteen green stars and shows the skyline of a city and a river. 1805 is the year Athens County was established. It was named after Athens, Greece, an early democratic city.
