Description of the flag

The flag was presented to the City Council on April 5, 1965 by the Greensboro Rotary Club. The flag depicts General Nathanael Greene, Commander of the American troops in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, and oak leaf wreath, symbol of sturdiness and durability. The flag is green with gold lettering, the green "symbolizing" the name "Greene". The flag was designed by Charles Hodgin.

The NAVA image at http://www.nava.org/Flag%20Design/City%20Survey%202004/city_flag_photos/Greensboro.jpg shows a ~2:3 dark green flag with the image of a statue surrounded by a golden garland and the words "City of Greensboro" above and "North Carolina" below, all set in golden serif capitals. The statue in question shows the original Mr. Green in an equestrian pose, unlike the city seal, which shows him as pedestrian, made from a tritone pattern of green, black and golden, not just golden on green. The NAVA image shows the letters "SM" at the lower fly corner of the wreath.
