Presentation of Hrastnik

Hrastnik history traces back to the Roman era due to the navigability of the river Sava. Modern development began in the second half of the XIXth century. As it can be guessed from the former coat of arms, Hrastnik is an important coal-mining site.

Municipal flag of Hrastnik

The current coat of arms and flag of Hrastnik were adopted on 7 May 1998.

The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.

The flag is rectangular in proportions 2:5, vertically divided green-white-green 3:4:3, so that the white field is square, containing the eradicated oak tree from the coat of arms in the middle.

Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] give the colour specifications as:
- Yellow: CMYK 0-20-100-0
- Red: CMYK 0-90-100-10
- Blue: CMYK 100-35-0-10
- Green: CMYK 100-0-100-40
They show the trunk as brownish-orange whereas the prescribed shade is clearly red.

The coat of arms can be blazoned as "Argent from a base sable growing an oak tree gules with three leaves vert".
Valt explained that the attribute in the coat of arms is canting, hrast meaning "oak". The black base symbolises the geological wealth (coal mines). The red trunk should remind the revolutionary history, since mining industry produced strong trade unions. The first strike in Slovenia broke out in Hrastnik in 1883.

From left to right, 1992-1998, 1991-1992, and before independence

As shown by Zalokar [zal90], the former coats of arms of Hrastnik have a golden, H-shaped, background with a green base, over this is a green "shield" with two factories and in chief a black rectangle with two crossed golden hammers. The black rectangle and green shield are connected with a diagonal bend of black and green.
The coat of arms used before the independence of Slovenia has a red five-pointed star and bears the name of the municipality.
