Explanation of the Flag

Red over white over black tricolor with green triangle next to the hoist.

About the colours of the current national flag of Sudan, information from the Sudanese government is as follows:

  1. Red stands for struggle and the martyrs of the Sudan and the Great Arab Land.
  2. White stands for Islam, peace, optimism, light and love.
  3. Black stands for Sudan and the Mahdiya revolution (the Black Flag).
  4. Green stands for prosperity, good and agriculture.

Arms of Sudan

[Arms of Sudan] by Paige Herring, 21 May 1998

Copied directly from the book Flags of the World by William Crampton (1990), the description is as follows:
'The arms are a secretary bird with a native shield on its breast; above it is a scroll with the motto, "Al Nadr Nila" (Victory is Ours), and beneath it is the name of the country.'

SOURCES - Smith, Flags and Arms Across the World (1980); Talocci, Guide to the Flags of the World (1982); Crampton, Flags of the World (1990); et al.

Paige Herring, 21 May 1998

Apparently Cramptom is wrong here, the text above eagle's head reads An-Nasr Lana, with the said meaning "Victory is Ours". The text below reads Jumhuriyat as-Sudan ad-Dimuqratiyah (=The Democratic Republic of Sudan).

Henry Churchyard, 6 April 2004

It seems that Nadr is simply a typo in the Crampons book. (Ed.)

Possible Naval Ensign

[Naval Ensign of Sudan] [Naval Ensign] ? 1:2
by Željko Heimer, 24 January 2003

Some years ago Jose Luis Cepero spent some time in Sudan. Casually in TV he sow a flag that is white with the (current) national flag in canton. Since pre-1969 war ensign was in of the same pattern, I assume that Sudanese Navy used after 1969 also a white ensign with the national flag in canton changed. Any confirmation?
