Overview

Fertőhomok is a village in Győr-Moson-Sopron county. Photo taken by me on 17th August 2001 at "General County Meeting" in Győr .

Coat of arms and description below from the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Atlas; HISZI-Map, 1998:
"The village was first mentioned in documents in 1274 as "Praedlum Humuky". The village was mainly owned by families Kanizsay, Nádasdy and Széchenyi. Large number of Croats run away from Turkish troops were settled here from 1520. Croat language is used only by old inhabitants, but the Croat traditions are kept alive by folk dance enssmble and tambura band. The village has a population of 495 persons."
The CoA of the village contains the elements of the Hungarian Coat of arms and the Coat of arms of Croatia too.

The Croatian name for Fertőhomok is Umok. The official village website at <www.fertohomok.hu> shows the arms as well.
