Štitar is a community in the Vukovar-Srijem County, in
the south-west corner of it, few kilometers east of Županja. It has abuot 2,600
inhabitants. It was formed in 2006 by secession from the city of
Županja.
The official
gazette of the County contains the decision describing the
symbols: Odluka (o opisu grba i zastave Opcine Štitar), 12.
studenog 2007, Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske
županije, br. 16/2007, 20. prosinca 2007. The next issue of
the gazette includes the decision on the use of the symbols:
Odluka o uporabi grba i zastave Opcine Štitar, 20. prosinca

br. 17/2007, 21. prosinca 2007.
The coat of arms of Štitar is in a triangular shield: argent
a hawk maron armed or holding a shield gules. The shield in the
coat of arms is canting for the community name meaning a
shieldbearer (more or less).
The flag is light blue with the coat of arms in the middle
bordered yellow.

contains excellent drawings of the coat of arms, flag and
ceremonial flag at <www.stitar.com>.
The text on the mentioned JPEG describes the symbols, including
the blazon provided (if we believe the document) by community
mayor himself, Marko Bikic, and if so, then being unusually
correct. The text continues explaining how there are no records
of the historical symbols of Štitar in archives and listing
relevant literature that does not include the historical coat of
arms of Štitar. Therefore, the text concludes that since
there were no historical coat of arms, the community elected
itself symbols to be the historical coat of arms [sic!].
The elements of the coat of arms are described so - shield - the
device after which the community got its name (shield: štit
in Croatian), although nothing that there are no evidence of
this etimology. The hawk is said to be the symbol of nature,
cleanness, Slavonia, also found in the name of the hunting
association "sokol" in Štitar, and also claimed to
be the swiftest living creature on the earth. It also confirms us
that the final design was made by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company
of Rijeka.
