On 29 December 2007, an article in the regional newspapers
"Glas
Slavonije" (Author: M. Ban) was published. Here is My
translation:
"The last community without its official symbols in the
Vukovar and Srijem County Stari Mikanovci granted the coat of
arms and the flag.
Stari Mikanovci - The Community of Stari Mikanovci was one of the
few units of local self-government in Croatia without its coat of
arms and flag, because the proposal for the coat of arms,
designed some ten years ago, was rejected by the state commission
and since then the question was not raised by anyone.
The current Council, headed with the mayor Tadija Orlovic,
actualized the issue of inexistance of the coat of arms and a
company from Koprivnica was hired and designed a proposal.
- It was our wish that in the Mikanovci's coat of arms is not
[sic!] included the church of St. Bartholomew (Sv. Bartol), and
the proposal was that it is included in the central part of the
coat of arms, since it is an unique historical, cultural and
architectural monument with which Mikanovci people are so proud
of. That proposal was refused by the Commission in the State
Archives, with explanation that there are already too many coats
of arms displaying castles, towers, churches and other buildings
- mayor Orlovic explained to us.
Therefore they decided for another also very valuable and
recognizable characteristic of Mikanovci - a twofold vessel of
the Vucedol culture from the period between 3000 and 2300 BC.
- This valuable archaeological findings was located in the ruins
in Stari Mikanovci when the elementary school was being built,
and it symbolizes the long lasting settlement of the area -
Orlovic says.
The vessel is golden, symbolizing the golden-yellow wheat fields
and the sun obove the plains. The vessel stands on a hill
symbolizing the ruins of Stari Mikanovci in which it was found,
but also the hill of Novi Mikanovci, upon which is located the
church of St. Bartholomew.
- The hill of green is symbol of fields in spring, meadows and
centuries old Slavonian woods, and the background of blue is the
sky above the Slavonian plains. The same blue is in the flag, in
the centre of which is coat of arms set - Orlovic
concludes."
Just a few comments:
- the claim that S.Stari Mikanovci. is "one of the few units
of local self-government in Croatia without its coat of arms and
flag" is incorrect - I would say that at most some 60% of
the units do have a coat of arms and the flag. Moreover, I am not
convinced that the claim that all other communities in the
Vukovar-Srijem County already have a symbol should be taken
seriously. Out of 26 communities we have some kind of info on 16
of them and nothing about the rest.
- I am not sure to which company in Koprivnica it is referred, it
may be with some connection to Draen and Draenka
Ernecic of Koprivnica Museum, who designed a great deal of coats
of arms in Koprivnica region.
- The Commission is organized not in the State Archives but in
the Central State Office for the Administration, although the
State Archives are obliged to provide for an opinion and at least
one member in the Commission is from the State Archives.

Stari Mikanovci is a community in the Vukovar and Srijem
County, some 40 km west of Vukovar,
with about 3,400 inhabitants, ca. 2,700 in the village of the
same name, the rest in the village of Novi Mikanovci.
The coat of arms is azure a double vessel or on a mount vert. The
vessel shown is an ancient vessel from the Vucedol culture (3000
- 2300 BC) found in Mikanovci.
The flag is blue with the coat of arms bordered white in the
centre.
A table flag is used of light blue bordered
white with triangualar ending, with the coat of arms in the
middle bordered white, the name of the community inscribed above
yellow and branch of oak and a bunch of maize in the base.
