Overview

The coat of arms is Argent a Cross Gules. Similar coat of arms is held by several other cities in the area, and probably originates from the crusade period. The flag uses unusual brown colour for the field, which is not fully confirmed.

Buje (in Italian: Buie) is a small city in northwest corner of inland Istria. It is probably most famous in modern time for the electronic factory "Digitron" situated there. Population totaling 5,500, with about 3,500 in the city itself.
Long ago (in 1996?) I reported the flag of Buje as well as the coat of arms from some source that I have not noted, but it was some weekly magazine or so having a photo therefrom. I noted that the flag is brown with the coat of arms in it. However, Tomislav Šipek visited Buje recently and found out that the colour of the flag field is not brown but rather dark red. The photo and lightning effects may easily explain why I misjudged the colour. The colour brown is, anyway, not among the allowed colours for the flag according to the Croatian regulations (red, blue, green, yellow and white are only allowed). Anyway, the flag hoisted at the city hall in Buje is a vertical variant with golden border all around and with the coat of arms off-set to top (similalry as the flags of neighbouring Umag!).

The official web site of the city includes two version of the Statutes, one from 2001 and the other from 2009: Statut Grada Buja, 31.10.2001, Službene novine Grada Buja, br. 5/2001, Statut Grada Buja, 30.07.2009, Službene novine Grada Buja, br. 11/2009
Both include identical determinations of the coat of arms and the flag (article 31-35 in the first, and 36-39 in the second) except that the first one also includes the determinations on the mayor's sash, which is not mentioned in the 2009 statutes any more.
The Coat of Arms is described simply: it is the historical coat of arms of Buje - in shape of a silver shield with a red cross. The shield is edged with white.
The flag is described as red with the coat of arms in the top part of the flag, so that the bottom point of the coat of arms matches the crosspoint of the diagonals. The flag is bordered with a golden edge. Bottom part of the flag is ornamented with rectangular indentations. The with to length ratio is 1:2.
One would presume that this describes the ceremonial flag. Unfortunately, the number and exact shape of the indentations is not mentioned.
The mayor's sash is of the same red as the flag, with the coat of arms in the front part of the sash. It is (was) worn over the right shoulder diagonally to the waist where it had a clasp.
There should be additional decisions on the coat of arms and flag, but they are not available on-line.
