Umag is a city in north western end of Istria (the Italian
name Umago is also official). The is about 13,000 inhabitants,
almost 8,000 of them living in the city itself. In 1992/93
administrative reform Umag was given status of a community, but
it was changed to the city status in 1997.
The official site of the city: Grad Umag <www.grad-umag.hr>
17.10.2003. contains the statutes of the city: Statut Grada
Umaga, 4.12.2001, Slubene novine Grada Umaga. The Statutes
include the description of the coat of arms and the flag.
The coat of arms is a historical one (as claimed by the Statutes,
but I believe that this could be proved from other sources too):
azure a lion or standing atop two towers argent issuing from a
wavy sea in base. The coat of arms is bordered with a white
border in the modern representations.
The flag of Umag is described as "tyrquise", with the
coat of arms in the middle. However, I believe that the name of
the colour is only a fancy name for the light blue shade used in
the coat of arms. This flag may be adopted officially in
mid-1990's, as Tomislav ipek reported previous flags still
frequent in use in the city in 2003.
This Previous Flag, that may have been adopted
in 1960's or so, was basically the same as the one today, but
bordered golden and the coat of arms is set towards hoist (or to
the top in the vertical variants).
The pre-1990's flag would most probably include a red
five-pointed star somewhere, so maybe it did and this flag is
adopted only in early 1990's.

The 2009
Statutes repeats word for word the 2001 determinations
regarding the coat of arms and the flag as already reported:
Statut Grada Umaga, 17.08.2009, Slubene novine Grada Umaga,
br.9/2009, 19.08.2009.
