Overview

Legrad is a small town about twenty kilometers due north of Koprivnica with some 2,600 inhabitants. It is situated at the confluence of Mura into Drava. It is said that the river flow removed the whole city from Medimurje (then in Hungary) into Podravina (Croatia) without moving single stone - the river switched the flow from south of the town to north of it. I really don't know how exact the story is and when it happened, I heard it long ago from my grandfather, who was born in Legrad.
The coat of arms and the flag are described in the statutes of 2001 issued in the official gazette (avilable on <www.glasila.hr>):  Statut Opcine Legrad, 1. listopada 2001. Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, br. 11/01, god. IX, Koprivnica, 5. listopada 2001. They must have been adopted somewhat earlier, say about 1997.
The coat of arms of Legrad is the historical coat of arms (claims the Stautes): Azure a fess argent, in base a boat proper and in chief a mullet or and a crescent of the second. The flag is blue with yellow bordered coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms is indeed a historical one (as the Statutes claim), since [ern03] agrees and show a picture of it from a source from 1920's, I believe. Unfortunately, no further details on the origin of this coat of arms is given.

The official gazette since 2000 is available on the web site of the County at <www.kckzz.hr> including decisions on symbols of its cities and communities. The communities adopted new statutes in 2006, typically containing the descriptions of coat of arms and flags adopted previously, so I just quote them for documetry purposes:
Legrad: Statut Opcine Legrad, 23.01.2006, Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko- križevacke županije, br. 1/06, 26.01.2006.

The web site at <library.foi.hr> include a project of digitazing of the regional journal Glas Podravine, from its first issues in 1951.
- Article from 1971 shows the historical 1610 coat of arms of Legrad. The modern coat of arms is based on this historical model.
- Article from 1995 include (unfortunately quite bad quality) photo of a road sign with the coat of arms of Legrad that was set on the roads entering the community.
- Article from 1996 repoerts that the Ministry approved the coat of arms of Legrad. Nice drawing of the coat of arms. Designer again Antoni Grgic, who designed the County coat of arms. It is recontruction of the 1610 coat of arms of Legrad (we have seem it above - with diagonal stripe!), the silver stripe stands for the Drava River, beneat it is brown boat, so called "šajka" - Legrad was once place of production of such boats that was the main trade mean in the region. The crescent and star are from the oldest Croatian coat of arms, present in many old Croatian local coats of arms.

From the official gazettes:
The description of the coat of arms and the flag is repeated in the new 2009 Statutes equal to the 2006 statutes: Statut Opcine Legrad, 02.07.2009, Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, br. 10/2009, 16.08.2009. str. 961.
