In the new administrative division of Croatia Djurdjevac
gained the status of a city only in 1997, when, on the celebral
session of the Council in February 1997 the new coat of arms
adopted in March previous year, were presented, presumably after
the approval from the Ministry was gained. A golden peacock on a
cannonball reminds to the legend, according to which the city was
saved from Turkish siege by fireing peacocks instead of
cannonballs. The stars are taken from the Ernust family arms.
Sigismund Ernust, ban (vice-roy) of Dalmatia, Croatia and
Slavonia since 1494 rebuilded the fortress of Djurdjevac to its
present shape. Until 1997 Djurdjevac had status of a community.
Adopted: 1 March 1996.

In the mean time, Đurdevac issued a number of decisions
concidering the coat of arms and the flag. here are the
essential, while those granting use of the coat of arms to
various commercial and social associations in the city are
ommited:
- Statut o izmjenama i dopunama Statuta Grada Đurdevca, 9.
veljace 2006, Slubene novine Grada Đurdevca, br. 1/06, 10.
veljace 2006.
Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Odluke o grbu i zastavi Opcine
Đurdevac, 9. veljace 2006, Slubene novine Grada Đurdevca,
br. 1/06, 10. veljace 2006. (see: here).
- Statut Grada Đurdevca (prociceni tekst), Slubene
novine Grada Đurdevca, br. 4/06, 10. lipnja 2006. Odluka o grbu
i zastavi Grada Đurdevca (prociceni tekst), Slubene
novine Grada Đurdevca, br. 4/06, 10. lipnja 2006. (see: here).
The Statute amendments and the amendment of the 1996 decision on
the coat of arms and the flag do not change the essence of the
design of the coat of arms and the flag, but mostly are
considered with the change of the text regarding the change of
the statuts from a community to a city and some other minor
amendments. The latter two are cleared texts of the Statutes and
the decision.
It should be noted that the official gazette 4/06 inludes a
drawing of the flag where the flag field is shown white with
coloured coat of arms, however, it must be a printng error, since
everywhere else the flag is clearly described as yellow.

The web site at <library.foi.hr>
include a project of digitazing of the regional journal Glas
Podravine, from its first issues in 1951.
- An
article from 1989 inlcudes an othervwise unrelated article on
philatelic society, but it mentions that the society marked the
500 anniversary of the coat of arms of Đurdevac. It must be some
other arms then the one used today, designed only in 1996.
- An
article from 1994 mentions the 1488 coat of arms of the
owners of Đurdevac above the gates of the city - possibly this
is the coat of arms refered into 500-anniversary above
- An article
from 1995 includes the report on the concourse for the coat
of arms and the flag of Đurdevac, with the comission Ivan
Lackovic - Croata, Zdravko abaric, Boica
Jeluic, Ksenija Prelec and Vlado Lecan to choose
three design to win 8000, 4000 and 2000 HRK. Another article
from 1995 includes the concourse.
- Another article
from 1995 brings a report on Antonio Grgic, designer of the
Coat of Arms and the flag of the County. It is stated that he
participated in concourses for several other Coats of Arms and
flags, namely: Lika-Senj County, Ogulin, Đurdevac, Koprivnicki
Bregi, Sokolovac, Gola, Dmje, Koprivnicki Ivanec, Hlebine,
Torcec...
He was awarded first prizes for teh Koprivnica-Krievci
County and Đurdevac (although it seems that the Coat of Arms
finally adopted is not his, but that of Marko Tipar, if my
sources are correct).
- Article
from 1996 includes a humorous item on the roorters and petty
quarels between the cities of Koprivnica
and Djurdjevac and the County (and their Coat of Arms, of course,
all having roosters) - including also several satirical poems. In
another
issue, the story (and photo) presents an autochthonous type
of fowl whoose rooster is "even heraldically correct"
having golden-yellow feather lined with black (the story is
actually on local fowl expert, but it is a nice touch of local
political events at the time).
A long Article
from 1996 is on the adoption of the Coat of Arms and flag of
(at the time still) Community of Đurdevac. The Coat of Arms is
pictured. The article brings no new info - it mostly recounts the
decision on forming the Comission (cf. above) and then how
comission choose the design and presented it to the assembly, who
adopted it "on penultimate Fraday". The remainder of
the article is recount of almost all articles of the decision,
almost word for word...
Another article on the same page, reports on a local
"fanzine" issued by a group of "hillies"
(people tending their small vinyards and enjoying their products
joyfully) that publishes "coats of arms" of these
people - apparently who adopted them theirselves and use them,
e.g. on their vine stickers and similar - although they would
hardly be called serious heraldry by serious heraldrists, it is
an interesting part of local customs.
- Another article
from 1996 includes again a story on Grgic, mentioning that he
designed the county Coat of Arms, won the concourances for the
Coats of Arms for Đurdevac and Koprivnicki Bregi and other non
heraldry and vexilology related esigns.
- Article
from 1997 shows the Coat of Arms of Đurdevac. The next
issue show again a drawing of teh Coat of Arms of Đurdevac,
with article describing it. It adds some details on the Coat of
Arms - that it was being "sought for" since 1992. The
rooster on a cannon ball reminds on the legend on a battle with
Tuirk - when it was fired instead of the cannon ball agains the
Turkish sieage of the city - after which the Turks abandoned the
siege. Green stands for Drava lowylands, while the stars are
taken from the family arms of Ernut - Sigismund Ernu,
the bishop of Pech and Ban of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia was
since 1494 the owner of the castle of Đurdevac.
- Article
from 1998 show a painting of the Coat of Arms of Ernut
from 1488 made by painter Zdravko abaric. Sigismund
Erut was ruler of the city under whom it reached its best
medieval prosperity, in 15th century.

Few more decision were made, making minor changes to the legal
text, but nothing substantial in the design: Odluka
o izmjeni Odluke grbu i zastavi Grada Ðurdevca,
19.03.2008, Slubene novine Grada Ðurdevca, br. 1/2008,
20.03.2008.
The above decisions changes the penal prescriptions for misuse of
the flag and Coat of Arms (staying mainly the same, but raising
the fee from 200 to 500 HRK for private misuse and explicitly for
misuse by private craftsmen and similar).
Then we have the new city Statutes of 2009, repeating word for
word the 2006 Statutes description of the Coat of Arms and the
flag in its Article 5: Statut
Grada Ðurdevca, 09.07.2009, Slubene novine Grada
Ðurdevca, br. 3/2009, 10.07.2009.
It was followed with yet another minor change in the decision,
providing more responsibility to the city mayor (and oddly do not
mention the 2008 amendments): Odluka
o izmjenama Odluke grbu i zastavi Grada Ðurdevca,
23.07.2009, Slubene novine Grada Ðurdevca, br. 4/2009,
24.07.2009.
