Josipdol is a community in he Karlovac County, population
6,500 (about 1,100 in the town of the same name itself), some 40
km southwest of Karlovac, south of
the city of Ogulin. The ancient city
of Modruš, nowdays in ruins is ocated in the community.
Modruš provided the name of the 1886-1918 westernmost
Croatian county of Mudruš-Rijeka. The medieval rulers of
Modruš were the Frankopan famly, one of the most important
of Croatian feudal families - princes of Krk and Modruš.
The Coat of Arms and the flags were adopted in
2003, without doubt designed by the Heraldik-art d.o.o. The coat
of arms of Josipdol is argent a heraldic helmet proper with a
mantle gules and or and for the crest a wing per fess gules and
or a mullet of the last in the first.
This is the helmet and the crest of the Frankopan family, whise
coat of arms is: per fess gules and or in the first a mullet of
the second. Such helmet and crest are usually set above the
shield, that would contain the main heraldic emblems, and the use
of helmet as a charge in the shield itself is very unusual.
The flag is red with the coat of arms in the middle.
The Ceremonial Flag is red gonflaon with the
coat of arms in the middle, the name of the community above and
birch ornaments in the three triangularly ending tails, finged in
gold along the bottom edge.

The propaganda leaflets of Heralid
Art d.o.o company from Rijeka, who designed the symbols of
Jospidol shows the table flag, obviously
based on the ceremonial flag, but not
entirely the same: red vertical flag ending triangularly, with
the coat of arms, name of the community and two linden branches
below.
A nitpicking viewer would also note that the inscription in the
ceremonial flag is made in two arches, while on the table flag
the word JOSIPDOL is inscribed in horizontal straight line.
This is a good place to argue about the reason for such
"dual" gonfalons - I guess that it goes about
pragmatism - not only that the production of the table flag being
the miniature copy of the ceremonial flag would be way too
expensive, but it would be probably also impractical for
production and use. On the other hand, the table flag in
miniature vertical format of the "normal" flag would be
too dull - and without the name of the community inscribed in it
would be, in the mind of its users, too unrecognisable.
Therefore, we have the middle solution of the
"nearly-ceremonial" flags being used as the
"ideal" table flags, fulfilling their function as they
should.

The new 2009
Statutes (Statut Opcine Josipdol, 14.07.2009, Glasnik
Karlovacke županije, br. ?/2009) includes the description of
the coat of arms and the flag in its Articles 8-10. It supersedes
the previous Statutes that would not have had the description
(Službeni glasnik Karlovacke županije br. 25/2001),
uunless it was inlcuded in the 2006 amendments (26/2006), neither
of the two I was able to find yet.
