Description

La Guancha's flag is green-white-green, divided per bend sinister. In the centre of the flag is the coat of arms. I spotted this flag on 25 January 2007 in front of the town hall of La Guancha.

A similar flag without coat of arms was granted according to Heraldica Institucional de Canarias by order of the President of Canary islands council on 3 December 1991 ("Otorgamiento de Bandera: Consejería de Presidencia del Gobierno de Canarias. Orden de 3 de Diciembre de 1991") and later published in BOC on the 15 January 1992.

<>The flag of the municipality of La Guancha has a ratio is 2:3. It is a green flag divided per bend sinister by a white stripe, its width is 1/3 of the total height of flag. The green colour represents orchards and fields and the pine forests of La Guancha. The white colour represents the riches of water and the fountain, which gave La Guancha its name. The municipality is however using this flag with CoA within the white stripe.

Standard

The standard (pendón) or ceremonial flag of La Guancha has a ratio of 2:3. In a green field is a white rectangle (at least 80% of total flag) containing the municipality's coat of arms. The coat of arms fills the rectangle completely.

Coat of Arms

A green Canarian pine stands on a green field in front of brown mountain ridges. From a smaller mountain on the left side springs a white fountain. All above is a light blue sky. The shield has a border with eight alternating red and golden (yellow) sections. Within each red one is a golden (yellow) ear of grain, within each golden one a blue grape of vine. Two sexy-looking Guanche women dressed in white furs (tamarco corte) and holding brown buckets are the shield's supporters. The shield is topped by a crown. Under the shield is a ribbon with a Spanish inscription: "Nombre te dieron agua y mujer." Translation: "Water and woman gave you [your] name."

According to Heraldica Institucional de Canarias p.85:

  • The pine reminds on the covering with those trees in old days at that place.
  • The mountains are symbolizing the Pico del Teide.
  • The spring turns out the rich water ressources at that place and it is called "fuente de la Guancha" ("Fountain of the Guanche woman").
  • Vine and grain refer to local agriculture.
  • The women represent the beauty of that local woman, who was comtemplated by a Castilian captain when she was at the foutain to supply her people with water. Noticing him, she ran away and was seen never again. This episode gave the fountain and finally the municipality its name.
