The "Entidad Local Áutonoma" (Submunicipal entity) of Serrato (570 inhabitants), located 90 km north of Málaga, is part of the municipality of Ronda. On 30 March 1898, the villagers required Serrato to be transferred from the municipality of Las Cuevas del Becerro to the municipality of Ronda. On 27 August 1994, their descendants approved the autonomy status in a referendum, which was confirmed on 11 May 1999 by the Government of Andalusia.

Serrato is famous for two Roman statues of the 1st century AD found in the village. The Serrato Shepherd ("Pastor de Serrato") was excavated in 1954 near the estate of Los Villares. Made of white marble, the statue lacks the head and the right forearm, the left hand being fragmented. Its dimensions are 73 cm in height, 36 cm in width and 23 cm in depth. Fernández de Avilés identified the figure as a shepherd. A bronze representation of the head of Dionysus / Bacchus was found before 1946 in the same place. The head was part of a statue, of which a few fragments were also excavated. Its dimensions are 18 cm in height, 17.5 cm in width and 16.55 cm in depth.

Description

The flag and arms of Serrato were approved by the Local Council on 8 June 2004 and submitted on 6 July 2004 to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed them by Decree on 6 September 2004, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 182 on 16 September 2004.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following:

Coat of arms: Spanish shield, divided per pale. 1. Azure a mount proper in background. 2. Argent two water fountains azure over three waves of the same. 3. Olive tree fields on a sky azure. Bordered white. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

Flag: The flag is in rectangular proportions. It is made of three equal stripes. The green stripe symbolizes hope and the greenness of our fields. The white stripe symbolizes peace and our white houses. The blue stripe symbolizes our water resources.

The symbols should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with their official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not appended to the Decree).

The symbols are shown on the municipal website. The coat of arms is indeed divided by a central triangle pointing downwards and the two lateral quarters include landscape drawings, not really heraldic. The stripes on the flag are placed vertically. The flag is represented, graphically, with proportions 1:2, which are quite unusual in Andalusian local flags. Permission to use the symbols on books and websites was granted to the "Consejería de Gobernación de la Junta de Andalucía" (Governing Council of Andalusia) on 9 February 2007.
