Introduction

The municipality of Vegas del Genil ( 8,068 inhabitants in 2008; 1,400 ha) is located on the western border of Granada, 12 km of the center of the provincial capital. The municipality, whose name literally means "The Lowlands of the Genil," was formed on 23 January 1976 by the merging of the former municipalities of Ambroz, Belicena and Purchil.

The area was settled successively by the Iberians, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans, who founded here the estate ("villa") of Bellicium (meaning "the place of the battle"). The other estates, of which no archeological remains have been found yet, were transformed in "cortijadas" and "alquerías" by the Moors. After the Christian reconquest, Belicena was resettled by Christian colonists while Ambroz and Purchil remained inhabited by Moriscos. After the expelling of the Moriscos in 1570, the three villages were resettled by colonists from Andalusia, Madrid and Zamora. The three modern villages emerged in the 18th century around the biggest estates.

Description

The flag and arms of Vegas del Genil were approved by the Municipal Council on 19 April 2004 and submitted to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed them by Decree on 15 May 2004, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 117 on 16 June 2004.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following:

Coat of arms: Per pale 1. Gules semy tobacco plants or; in base, wavy argent and azure. 2. Argent a pomegranate proper faceted and slipped. [The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed].

Flag: Rectangular panel, in proportions 2/3, divided in three equal vertical stripes; the central stripe white with a pomegranate in its colours in the middle, and the lateral stripes blue with three white horizontal wavy stripes.

The symbols should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with their official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not appended to the Decree).

The flag shown on Wikipedia does not have the prescribed proportions of 2:3 and has the central stripe slightly narrower than the two others.
