Introduction

The municipality of Turón (330 inhabitants in 2007; 5,500 ha) is located in the mountain region of Alpujarra, 150 km south-east of Granada. In the Roman times, Turón was the mining colony Turobriga; the local lead mines have been abandoned long ago. Turón was one of the few villages where the Moors did not commit violence against their Christian neighbours, and even protected them, during the Alpujarra revolt (late 16th century); this noble gesture did not prevent them from being slaughtered by troops sent by King Philip II. The village was subsequently resettled by Christian colonists from all over Spain.
