Introduction

The municipality of Monachil (6,644 inhabitants in 2008; 9,013 ha) is located 10 km south-east of Granada.

Once a rural village, mostly known for the Church of Incarnation, built on 1501 over a former mosque and housing an altarpiece from the 16th century, Monachil is now world famous due to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada, totally located on its municipal territory.

At the end of the 19th century, Ángel Ganivet, Spanish Consul in Helsinki, aired the project of creating an "Andalusian Finland" in Sierra Nevada. founded in 1898, the "Diez Amigos Limited" was renamed in 1912 the "Sierra Nevada Society," promoting the development of mountain sports and the building of mountain hotels. However, the creation of a modern ski resort started only in 1964. On 12-25 February 1996, the Sierra Nevada resort hosted the World Alpine Skiing Championship; scheduled to 1995, the competition was postponed due to lack of snow. Among the winners were famous champions of the time, for instance Deborah Compagnoni, Pernilla Wiberg, Marc Girardelli and Alberto Tomba.
