Introduction

The municipality of Cúllar Vega (6,300 inhabitants; 4.3 sq. km), located 10 km south-west of Grenada, in the heart of the Plain ("Vega") of Grenada, is one of the 32 villages forming the metropolitan area of the Province of Grenada.

Mentioned for the first time in a written document in the XIIth century, the name of the village (aka Cular and Cúllar de la Vega) comes from the Arab word qűllar, ("height"), itself probably originating from the Latin collum. This origin might indicate that there was a Roman villa on the site of Cúllar.

The Muslims increased agriculture by developing irrigation; nothing changed after the Christian reconquest, until King Filip II expelled the Moriscos of Grenada after the Alpujarras rebellions (1568 and 1571). Resettlement of the area started in 1571, and a few years later the limits of the territory of Cúllar were fixed, nearly equivalent to the limits of the modern municipality.

Description

As reported by "Ideal," 22 July 2008, the municipal administration of Cúllar Vega has launched a contest for the selection of municipal flag, to be held from 15 July to 15 September 2008. Mayor Juan de Dios Moreno said that the four flag proposals were designed by Antonio Nieto Carnicer, an heraldist from Sevilla. The four proposals include the green, blue and white colours, symbolizing the Plain of Grenada, the waters of river Dílar, and the snows of the Sierra Nevada, respectively.
