Introduction

The municipality of Cuevas del Campo (2,131 inhabitants in 2008; 9,700 ha) is located 130 km north-east of Granada, on the border with the Province of Jaén. Originally a farmers' hamlet known as "Campo de los Aljibes" (The Field of the Water Tanks, refering to tanks built in 16th century by the Moors, rather than by the Romans), then a village named in the 19th century "Cuevas del Campo de los Aljibas" (refering to the traditional cave dwellings), the village seceded on 21 November 1980 (Royal Decree No. 2916) from the municipality of Zújar to form the municipality of Cuevas del Campo.
