Introduction

The municipality of Cenes de la Vega (6,458 inhabitants in 2008; 700 ha) is located 5 km south-west of Granada, in the Granada plain ("vega").

There is no historical account of Cenes de la Vega before the 16th century; beforehand, the town probably experienced the same troubled history as Granada. During the Muslim period, the place was settled only during the period of silkworm rearing, therefore its nickname of "villa de la seda" (Silk Town).

Description

The flag and arms of Cenes de la Vega were approved by the Municipal Council on 31 March 2008 and submitted on 4 April 2008 to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed them by Decree on 18 April 2008, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 92 on 9 May 2008.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following:

Coat of arms: Shield tierced per bend sinister. 1. Gules a pomegranate or faceted gules. 2. A bend sinister azure fimbriated argent. 3. Vert. The shield surmonted by a Royal crown closed.

Flag: Rectangular flag in proportions 2:3 made of a blue ascending diagonal stripe bordered white, a red triangle along the hoist charged with a yellow pomegranate and a green triangle along the fly.

The flag should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with its official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not apprended to the Decree).

The flag is therefore a banner of the municipal arms, as shown on the municipal website (flag, coat of arms).
