The municipality of Agrón (374 inhabitants in 2007; 2,700 ha) is located 30 km south-west of Granada.
The Moorish chronicles mention the village of Agrum, a name derived from Latin ager, "a field." However, this village, whose remains are known today as "Old Agrón," was located a few kilometers from the modern Agrón. The village, located on a small hill, is formed of c. 120 houses lined along a single street nearly forming a circle.
