Introduction

Villanueva de la Serena lies in central south Badajoz province, Extremadura. The municipality has 149.63 sq.km and 23,997 inhabitants. The arms was adopted on 27th September 1956 and the flag on 30th December 1981. Description

The flag of Villanueva de la Serena has the same stripes as the Catalan one but with blue and grey colours; it also has a coat-of-arms but I couldn't get it.

The flag apparently represents the river Guadiana, which flows nearby the town. The coat of arms is divided in four quarters. The first one is the Cross of the Order of Alcántara that conquered the zone, the second one a mermaid (serena in Spanish) which is the [canting] symbol of the town, the third one is the Encomienda Castle which can be found in Villanueva, and the fourth —where the flag comes from— represents the river Guadiana. There is also a ribbon above the coat of arms which says "PVERTA SOY DE LA SERENA" ("I am the gate to La Serena"), a comarca (county) which starts in Villanueva.
