Introduction

The inhabitants of the town of Almendralejo (Province of Badajoz, Spain) will have to select their municipal flag on the Internet, as announced on 10 April 2006.

The municipal administration asked the help of the Sociedad Española de Heráldica y Vexilología to design the proposals. Based on historicaland heraldic research, four proposals were made. The electronic vote shall be an opportunity to show the inhabitants of Almendralejo the potential of the new technologies for the improvement of the local life and citizens's participation to it.

The electronic vote is supported by the Plan for Technological Alphabetization and Free Software, set up by the Council for Infrastructure and Technological Development of the Government of Extremadura, and managed by the Regional Association of the Peoples' Universities of Extremadura, jointly with the Municipality of Almendralejo.

The four proposals are shown on the same website, also used for the vote [I have not attempted to vote, I guess this will be possible only for the inhabitants of Almendralejo]:

The coat of arms is white with an uprooted tree (probably an orange tree) and the shield is surmonted by a crown.

The result of the electronic vote for the (s)election of the municipal flag of Almendralejo has been reported by Gonzalo Parra in "Hoy Digital." The electronic process was secured so that every citizen of Almendralejo could vote only once.

The winning design (336 votes) is proposal #1, described as "a rectangular flag in proportion 2:3, vertically divided in three white-green-white stripes of equal width, with in the middle of the flag the coloured municipal coat of arms.

  • Proposal #2 , described as a rectangular flag in proportion 2:3, gyronny white and green with the municipal coat of arms in the middle of the flag, received 185 votes.
  • Proposal #4, similar to proposal #2 but gyronny white, green and yellow, received 140 votes.
  • Proposal #3, described as a rectangular flag in proportion 2:3, white with the green tree with yellow fruits from the coat of arms, received only 40 votes.

The elected design will be approved on 26 June 2006 by the Municipal Council as the local flag and should be later approved by the Government (Junta) of Extremadura.

I wonder how they managed to do that and to safeguard the process against fraud and multiple voting.

The new coat of arms and the flag of Almendralejo have been adopted by the Municipal Council on Lundi 26 June 2006. The councillors from PSOE and PPE have voted for the proposals, the councillors from IU (Izquierda Unida - United Left) against them. The flag was elected by the inhabitants of Almendralejo during an electronic vote I have described in detail in earlier messages.
