The municipality of Vícar (20,220 inhabitants on 2006; 6,447 ha) is located in the south-west of the Province of Almería, Andalusia. It is made of the town of Vícar proper (a typical, tiny village - 160 inhabitants - of the Alpujarra region and the official seat of the municipality) and other settlements, the main of them being La Gangosa, La Puebla de Vícar (the administrative seat of the municipality) and Las Cabañuelas.

The flag of Vícar was approved by the Municipal Council on 10 October 2007 and submitted on the same day to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed it by Decree on 24 October 2007, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 220 on 8 November 2007.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following: "- Rectangular flag with the length one and a half the hoist, vertically divided red-green (1:2). On the red stripe is placed the municipal coat of arms bordered in white, in which or and argent are reaplced by yellow and white, respectively."

The symbols should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with their official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not apprended to the Decree).

The municipal administration of Vicar (Province of Almeria, Andalusia) has launched a contest for the adoption of a municipal flag. All citizens of Vicar aged 18 or more can propose designs. The deadline is 2 May 2006; a jury will select three designs, and the citizens will have to select which design will be eventually proposed to the regional government (Junta de Andalucía).

The colours of the flag should recall the landscape, geography, history, culture, traditions and values of Vicar. The coat of arms of Vicar should be considered too for the design of the flag.

The municipal flag and motto of Vícar have been approved on 24 October 2007 by a Decree of the "Dirección General de Administración Local de la Consejería de Gobernación de la Junta de Andalucía" (General Directorate of the Gouvernment Council of the Government of Andalusia). They will be added, as the institutional symbols of the municipality, to the "Registro Andaluz de Entidades Locales" (Andalusian Registry of the Local Entities). The flag was designed by Miguel Navarro Gámez, using the colours of the coat of arms officially adopted in 1985 after a study by Felipe Llopis Plenell.

Flag:

Paño rectangular vez y medio más largo que ancho con superficie tercia al asta en la que el tercio próximo al asta es de color rojo y los dos tercios restantes, de color verde. Sobre el tercio rojo se carga el escudo municipal, rodeado de un filete blanco, y en el que los metales oro y plata se sustituyen por el amarillo oro y el blanco, respectivamente.

A rectangular flag, in ratio 2:3, verticaly divided red-green (1:2), the red stripe charged with the municipal coat of arms outlined in white and with the colours yellow and white replacing or and argent, respectively.

Escudo cortado y medio partido:
1º de azur "edificio" de plata, representativo de la antigua casa castillo, después la iglesia local,
2º de gules, cruz latina de oro y en punta menguante ranversado de plata,
3º de sínople, un cuerno de la abundancia de oro.
Al timbre corona real cerrada.
Autorizada su concesión, el 9 de diciembre de 1985 por orden de la Junta de Andalucía. El primer cuartel simboliza la Iglesia fortaleza existente en la Villa. La cruz sobre la media luna o menguante ranversado simboliza el fin de la dominación árabe tras la reconquista.
Por último, la cornucopia, es el símbolo de la abundancia de su agricultura, fuente principal de Vícar.

Per pale, gules a Latin cross or in base a crescent reversed argent, vert a cornucopia or, a chief azure a building argent, representing the old fortified house, today the parish church. The shield topped with a Royal crown. Granted on 9 December 1985 by the Government of Andalusia. The chief represents the old fortified church of the town. The cross and the crescent upside-down represent the end of the Arab domination and the Reconquest. The cornucopia represents agriculture, the main source of income in the town.

The coat of arms of Vícar, as shown, together with the flag, on the municipal website, was granted by the Andalucian Government on 9 December 1985. The blazon is

Per fess the upper half per pale.
1. Azure a building (sic) argent, representing the old fortified manor, now used as the local church.
2. Gules a Latin cross in base a crescent upside down [argent].
3. Vert, a cornucopia or.
The first quarter represents the parish church. The second quarter symbolizes the reconquest of the village from the Moors. The third quarter represents the main source of income for the village, agriculture.
