Introduction

The municipality of Benizalón (293 inhabitants in 2008; 3,200 ha) is located in the Sierra de los Filabres, 60 km north-east of Almería.

Most historical sources on Benizalón date from later than the Alpujarra Revolt and the expelling of the Moriscos. Benizalón, together with the villages of Alcudia de Monteagud, Tahal, Lucainena de las Torres and a few more located today in the Province of Granada, formed the "Estado de Tahalá," owned by Enrique Enríquez de Guzmán, subsequently transferred to the Marquis of Aguilafuente.
