Introduction

The municipality of Benitagla (94 inhabitants in 2008; 700 ha) is located in the Sierra de los Filabres, 65 km north-east of Almería.

In the Morisco period, Benitaglia had 60 inhabitants, all Moriscos. After the Alpujarra Wars and the expelling of the Moriscos, the resettlement of the village was organized in 1572 by the Resettlement Administration of the Royal Chancelry of Granada. Its isolated location, far from the lord's manor and its lack of lands allowed only six colonists to resettle the village.
