The municipality of Almócita (163 inhabitants in 2008; 3,083 ha) is located 55 km north-west of Almería.

Like several other villages in the region, Almócita claims to have been founded by the lineage of Tubal, one of Noah's grandsons; however, the village is of Moorish origin and is considered as the best preserved Morisco village of the province. The village grew around a water tank, located on the site of the today's town hall; it had a source, baths, a bread oven flanking the mosque, a grain mill and two oil mills powered by river Bogaraya; subsequently, the Marquis of Bogaraya set up a forge on the river, which produced 30 tons of iron each year. The village was also known for silk production. The surroundings of Almócita were rich in ore, which was exploited very early; the village owned parts of the famous lead mine of Solana, located on the Cerro del Capitán (Captain's Hill).

In 1570, Juan of Austria negociated in Almócita the surrending of the revolted Moriscos. The peace was celebrated under a oak located in the estate known as "Cortijo del Hadid," quickly renamed "Cortijo de las Paces" (Peace's Estate).

Description

The flag and arms of Almócita were approved by the Municipal Council on 3 February 2004 and submitted to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed them by Decree on 19 March 2004, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 64 on 1 April 2004.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following:

Flag: Rectangular flag in dimensions one and a half longer than high, purple, surrounded by a white border of height 1/6 of the flag hoist. In adequate dimensions, the municipal coat of arms, in which or and argent are replaced by yellow and white, respectively. The shield shall be surrounded by a yellow fimbriation.

Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Purple, a tower or terraced of the same masoned sable port and windows azure. 2. Argent semy of grapevines vert. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The symbols should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with their official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not appended to the Decree).
