Introduction

The municipality of Alcolea (957 inhabitants in 2007; 6,700 ha) is located in the Alpujarra mountains, 70 km north-west of Almería. Like several other Spanish places of the same name, Alcolea was protected by a fortress ("al-qulay'a," diminutive of "al-qal'a") in Moorish times.

Description

The flag, arms, anagram and slogan of Alcolea were approved by the Municipal Council on 11 October 2004 and submitted on 13 October 2004 to the General Directorate of Local Administration, which confirmed them by Decree on 13 January 2005, published in the Andalusian official gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, BOJA) No. 20 on 31 January 2005.

The relevant parts of the Decree are the following:

Coat of arms: Shield divided per fess the upper part divided per pale. 1. Gules a tower or port and windows azure. 2. Argent four waves azure. 3. Azure an olive tree proper on a terrace of the same. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

Flag: Panel in proportions 2/3, divided by a wavy line in two parts: the upper part red with a yellow tower with blue port and windows, centered; the lower part made of four equal wavy stripes, white, green, white and blue.

The symbols should be registered on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities, with their official written description and graphics (as originally submitted, but unfortunately not appended to the Decree).
