Read at Wikipedia all about Banco Santander Central Hispano (BSCH), a mammoth banking and finacial corporation, #1 in the Eurozone. It traces its ancestry to the 1857 provincial bank of Santander (in northern Spain), and has grown subsequently by mergers and takeovers.

It operates in Spain, Argentina, Austria, Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, São Tomé and Príncipe, Switzerland, United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The flag of Santander Bank is red with the logo on the upper hoist and lettering reading either “Santander” or any of its many local subsidiaries of brand names. In Portugal, after the takeover of Banco Totta, the latter's flag was immediatly replaced by a red flag with logo and "Santander Totta" (the name of the local subsidiary) on it, but some months later this usage has been replaced by a “pure-blooded” “Santander” only version. I guess the same thing happens in other similar cases, such as the 2004 acquisition of British bank Abbey National.
