City of Werther

Description of flag: It is a red over white over red (1:3:1) three stripes with the coat of arms shifted to the hoist.
Description of the coat of arms: It is a red and silver(=white) quarterly divided shield. The left chief and the right base are showing the coat of arms of the Counts of Ravensberg, three red chevrons in a silver(=white) field. The right chief shows three silver(=white) triangle in a red filed in a triangular configuration. The left base shows two silver(=white) clubs in a red field.
Meaning: The chevrons are the ensign of the Counts of Ravensberg, the triangles that one of the family von Werther genannt Edessen, the clubs of the family von Cappel. The name von Werther genannt Edessen is a westphalian special. Though the civil name is von Werther, everybody calls the family Edessen.
The colours red and white are not only those of the county of Ravensberg but also of the Prussian province Westfalen(engl. Westphalia), to which the city belonged since 1815..

Die kommunalen Hoheitszeichen des Landschaftsverbandes, der Kreise, Städte und Gemeinden in Westfalen-Lippe, 2003 (in English: Coats-of-arms, seals, flags. The communal symbols of the Landscape Association, the counties, towns and municipalities in Westphalia-Lippe).
The flag has been authorized on 12 November 1973, by the Regierungspräsident in Detmold (district president). The gif should be changed to 3:5 instead of 2:3.
In addition the hanging flag variant (Banner) has also been authorized, and is probably the preferred variant.
Interestingly, the city statute (Hauptsatzung) of 1999 does not correctly describe the flag, but just mentions that the "city colours are red-white." Without further information this usually would be interpreted as a bicolour of red and white, and not a triband in the ratio 1:3:1.
