Title: National Flags
Medium: book

Baxter
Edition (publisher:
place): Frederick Warne and Co.:
London and New York (United Kingdom)
Language: English
Edition date: 1934 (no edition specified;
presumably first)
Pages: 190
Format: 185×120 mm
Remarks: hard-back with dust cover.
Recommended.
Short introduction.
Part One. British Empire 30 pages.
Covers British flags in general, then deals with the national
flags of the dominions and protectorates, and badges of the colonies,
one by one.
Part Two. Foreign Countries 80 pages.
Short entry for each country arranged alphabetically. Every entry
has a black and white drawing of the flag with colours indicated by
a letter code. Surprisingly good system; much better than
hatching/shading. Also a list of «Days when the National Flag
is Flown» for nearly every entry. Just two fairly ordinary colour
plates of National Flags and two colour plates of aircraft insignia.
Ends with all the national flag flying days listed by the calendar,
and with flags and aircraft insignia classified by appearance.
I’ve not especially checked it for accuracy, but it seems
quite good. Lists a large number of authorities consulted, including
the Chief Librarian of the East Riding County Library at Beverley and
the staff of the Hull Reference Library.
A neat little book. In some ways a fore-runner of
Warne’s, «Observer’s Book of Flags» series
[cra91], but with a better
layout.

This book deals with the flags used by the Uruguayan national
hero José Gervasio de Artigas from 1812 to 1820, and the later
re-adoption of the Artigas’ flag as an Uruguayan National
symbol. The book has some information about Argentine provincial
flags influenced by Artigas’ federalist ideas.
Agustín Beraza was a very important Uruguayan History
scholar. He investigated about a lot of details of the Artigas
period in Uruguay. For example we can mention his investigations
about Artiguist Privateers.
The book Las Banderas de Artigas has 2 color plates with a total
of 26 illustrations (different Artiguist flags). It also has 2 black
and white plates (the Artiguist Coat of Arms & the reproduction on
an old graphic with the design of Artigas’ flag).

Like the other states of Central and Eastern Europe, Poland was
confronted after 1989-90 with the task of redefining its conception
of itself as a state and portraying its restored sovereignty. This
article examines a broad spectrum of forms and media used by the
state to portray itself visually. The main features of these
self-representations are identified as the legitimising emphasis
on Poland’s state tradition, a preference for the idea of military
martyrdom which has been inherited from the communist period, and
the strong presence of religious motifs which is typical of Polish
culture.
