Biography: [ffl94a].

Crampton’s [doctoral] dissertation was not published. The subject was the German Flaggenstreit of the 1920s. It was submitted to Manchester University, and accepted, but he was not able to expand it before he died. We have some of his research notes and much of his research material in the FI Library.

Biographical notes:

At the The Mystic Seaport Library website, the Crothers collection is described followed by a biography and additional details (very interesting: sources!).
Jan Mertens, 15 Aug 2005

In 1935 William L. Crothers started employment in the Design Division of the Philadelphia Navy Yard and joined the Philadelphia Ship Model Society. These two maritime organizations formed his life. In 1941 he started to produce plans for the use of ship model makers, Sea Gull Plans. His interest in flag hoist signals and house flags originated as part of the plan production process and slowly found himself drawn to the subject of flag hoist signaling in detail. Over the years he visited many museums along the east coast of the United Sates ferreting out the far-flung information that was tucked away in each facility. In 1996 he completed the subject of house flags to the fullest extent that he was able. In 2001, the volumes were presented to Mystic Seaport Library in order to insure that they would safely survive for posterity as a convenient source of reference on the subject.
António Martins, 16 May 2006, quoting and resuming from the The Mystic Seaport Library website
