Some of the vehicle license plates that incorporate flag images are enlisted and described here. More about flags on them see at appropriate pages.

Canada

British Columbia have her flag on the plates.

Croatia

Croatia have the coat of arms between the town digraph and the number and red-white-blue stripes along the upper and lower edge of the plates.

European Union

The new EU standard about car plates (not yet employed in all EU states): white with letters, numbers, the EU flag and the country-car letter. I saw them for two EU countries: "D" for Germany and "B" for Belgium.

The same pattern is used with France, Ireland and Portugal.

Georgia

It contains the Georgian flag, the abbreviation "GEO", and the license number in a format something like "ABC-123" (using Roman letters), all on one piece of metal.

Bruce Tindall 24 May 1996

Hungary

Hungary has a red-white-green flag on the car plates under the H indicating the state.

Lesotho

While no longer on the national flag, the vehicle registration plates from Lesotho still display the Basuto Hat symbol which was on the former flag. The plates show the "hat" followed by letters (2) to demarcate district and then numbers in blue on a white background.

Most of the other countries around have black on yellow so the Lesotho plates are quite distinctive.

Macedonia

Macedonia used plates similar to Croatia, with a red shield and golden sun. I believe it is changed since.

Romania

Romanian plates follow the same pattern as Hungarian - to the right side there is a blue vertical stripe with letters 'RO' under the flag.

Slovenia

Slovenia uses a complicated, but interesting system with towns' coats of arms in between digraph and numbers. The digraphs are of wider regions, but each community displays their own arms, so there are more different arms (over 150) then digraphs (some dozen of them). Wander if there is a list (with images)?

South Africa

South Africa is in the process of changing number plates to reflect the new provinces.... Gauteng province is to follow the Lesotho example using blue on white. The new provincial arms will be in the centre in blue with "GP" at the end to denote Gauteng Province.

All the other provinces to date are following the former computerised system of 3 letters, 3 numbers with the provincial prefix (e.g. NW for North West, EC for Eastern cape etc.) at the end in black on a yellow background.

Switzerland

Switzerland displays the national and cantonal crest (identical to the flag) on all license plates.

United States

Alaska and Alabama have flags on their plates
