This is the most popular logo flag at Mississippi State University in
Starkville, Mississippi. A good friend of mine is on the athletic staff at
Mississippi State and has served there for nearly 30 years. His story of the
logo is below:
"The logo was designed by Allen " Beeker" Beam. Allen
worked for us as a S.T. [student trainer] for a year and then moved over to
Men's basketball as a manager. His dream was to do athletic design work etc.
Richard Williams the head coach asked him to design a logo for the basketball
team to use on equipment, uniforms etc. It just took off from there. The funny
part is that had it been done "professionally" it would have cost thousands of
dollars probably. I think Coach Williams gave Allen a couple of hundred for his
work and out of his own pocket. Go figure."
Richard William's coached at
Mississippi State from 1986 to 1998. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing the logo
in the late 80's but can't say for sure. Today, it graces everything
"Mississippi State" except for the caps on the baseball team. As far as the
color designs go, I would reckon that the maroon flag is a bit more popular than
the white, but once again, they are made up by the thousands and used
interchangeably.
