Description of the flag

The City of Portland, Tennessee, provided:

"This was a contest in 1987 sponsored by the Rotary Club for 8th grade students. The winner was: Delana Henley from Portland Middle School and chosen by the Members of the Portland Rotary Club. There were only 2 flags made: 1 for the City of Portland & 1 for Delana to keep. The City of Portland Flag was on the outside pole on display for some time. Then it was brought in & stored so that it wouldn't fade or get destroyed. The flag was found upstairs in storage in 2000. The flag has been on display in the City Hall front lobby since that time.

The history on the flag was almost lost until the Portland Leader newspaper had a "Remember When?" photo in the paper of this flag. The little girl that designed this flag is now a young lady & she called to identify the photo. Her name is Delana Henley-Ladd. She is a 2nd grade school teacher in Gallatin at Vena Stuart Elementary School. Delana was nice enough to call City Hall & give Janice Ferret some history on this flag. The Portland Leader then re-created the photo from 1987 with our current Mayor Ken Wilber. Delana still has her flag as well."

The flag consists of 5 horizontal stripes lilac-white-lilac-white-lilac, and a small white canton with a strawberry and stylized letter "P" with "PORTLAND" in small white letters on it. Information and photo of the flag thanks to Janice Ferrett, City Hall Receptionist and Channel 3 Manager, City of Portland.
