Description of the Flag

Herculaneum is a city in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,805 at the 2000 census, although it has likely declined in recent years due to toxic metal contamination.

Origin of the name: Herculaneum was laid out by Moses Austin in 1808, and named after the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Austin is said to have chosen the name because the limestone ledges overlooking the Mississippi River resembled a Roman amphitheatre. Lead smelting is still the major industry in this town."

More about the city and its history at municipal website: http://www.cityofherculaneum.org/.

The city flag is shown on a photo in an article about the city's bicentennial: http://jeffcountyjournal.stltoday.com/articles/2008/01/09/news/sj2tn20071229-1230ndj_bicen.ii1.txt. Although text is talking about coming bicentennial celebration and hoisting of the bicentennial flag in the city, photo shows the common city flag. The bicentennial flag is white (silver) with bicentennial logo on it: http://www.herculaneum2008.com/Comm_Items.htm.

"The Herculaneum Bicentennial Committee is now selling 2' X 3' Bicentennial flags at the cost of $25.00. The flags are digitally printed and contain two grommets for hanging. The flags feature the colorful Bicentennial logo and are printed on a light silver background. The flags can be flown outdoors or indoors." The bicentennial logo can be seen here: http://www.herculaneum2008.com/Logos.htm.
