Description of the flag

In 1991, a contest was held to design a city flag. Donna Winter of Mankato created the design and won the flag contest. In 1994, Donna Winter added "Mankato" to the flag design. The flag represents many aspects of the City of Mankato:

Mankato rests at the intersection of the Blue Earth and Minnesota rivers. The light blue represents the rivers. The City of Mankato has been designated a "Minnesota Star City", which is depicted by a star on the flag. The steamboat reminds us of the river travel of the past. 1868 is the year in which the City of Mankato became incorporated. The green color represents the agriculture and parks of the Mankato are. The darker blue color represents the historical blue copper (blue earth) that was found in the region.
