Description of the flag

The flag of the City of Greenfield, Indiana, is green with a wide white stripe positioned diagonally from top right to bottom left. On the middle of the flag is positioned the city shield. It consists of top name of the city "GREENFIELD" on a green background. The rest of the shield is divided in quarters, 1st and 4th are white, 2nd and 3rd are brown: The corn symbolizes the area’s agriculture and “green fields;” the mortar and pestle acknowledge Eli Lilly and Company (a local branch of the worldwide pharmaceutical and agricultural science industry); the open book represents James Whitcomb Riley a local poet who became the Indiana “Hoosier Poet;” and the rising sun is from the state emblem of the sun rising on each day—a new beginning filled with opportunities.

There was a flag contest approximately 25 years ago. Jack Hite’s design was chosen as the winning entry. He is now deceased. Information courtesy by Larry McGuire, Mayor's Assistant, City of Greenfield.
