Flag Description

Although the city webpage at www.ci.glendale.ca.us shows no civic heraldry, the NAVA city flag survey shows the Glendale city flag to be a lemon yellow rectangle with the city seal and the name of the city in black block lettering beneath. However, the seal itself does not appear on the municipal web site, although there is a municipal logo consisting of a white line drawing of what I take to be the tower of City Hall on a blue field. The depiction of the city seal on the flag is too small for me to distinguish any details.
Ron Lahav, 21 October 2004

Complementing Ron's description, I can add that the seal has the usual lettered ring, blue with yellow text, which reads "City of Glendale" above and "California" below, set in sans-serif capitals and with two stars in each of the two spaces between these writings. Inside the ring a thin four-point star, golden and black in compass-rose style, divides the available space in four quadrants: clockwise from the upper right (sinister) a modern building in white on a green ground and against light blue sky; the bear and star from the flag of California; a fountain gushing and a hand holding three lightning bolts; and a rural landscape with a one-story house against woodland and mountains (need help identifying these buildings). On the center, over all, an "English" shield edged gold, showing a naturalistic peacock undisplayed, with a bald eagle displayed for crest and a scroll blow reading "The Jewel City".

At www.ci.glendale.ca.us/images/seal.gif, the official website shows a very small version of this, but Wikipedia has a very large image at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Glendale_CA_seal.jpg, showing all this in full color and excruciating detail. However, the NAVA image shows a slightly different seal: The seal rim with letters is missing, replaced by a thick dark ring (perhaps blue, like the lettering), blue replaces gold and white in the star and shield, and the backgrounds of all quarters are yellow — as also is the bear (!), reduced to a dark outline. The image above more or less follows the NAVA image (which, if accurate, will need more detail to be correctly redrawn), and below is a version with the seal unmodified. Comments welcome.
