About the Soviet Navy

The Navy of USSR had 4 broad-pennants: All they had the navy ensign at the hoist and the fly of different colours:

• red fly
  for Commander of a Formation of ships (Komandir soedineniya korabley)
• white fly
  for Senior Commander (Starshiy na reide)
• blue fly
  for Commander of a Division of ships (Komandir soedineniya korabley)
• green fly
  for Commander of a Formation of ships of the Border Guard Forces (Komandir soedineniya korabley pogranichnyh voysk)

The only pre-1972 use of two-letter abbreviations on Soviet uniforms that I know of is the Navy’s use of

Baltic Fleet

СФ (SF)

Northern Fleet

СФ (TF)

Pacific Fleet

ЧФ (ĈF)

Black Sea Fleet

Ф (F)

General Fleet Service
