The municipality of Oplotnica, named after a small river, was formed in 1998, from parts of the municipality of Slovenska Bistrica. It is located on the south-western slopes of Pohorje.

The flag and arms of Oplotnica are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi, adopted on 12 October 1999, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, nr. 91/99, 10 November 1999.
The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.
The flag is rectangular, in proportions 2:5, vertically divided yellow-blue-yellow, the middle blue field being square and containing the attribute from the coat of arms, the white mill wheel.
Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] give the following colour specifications:
- Yellow: Pantone 109
- Golden yellow: Pantone 1225
- Green: Pantone 355
- Blue: Pantone 300
- Red: Pantone 185
- Black: Pantone Black

Coat of arms of Oplotnica - Image by Željko Heimer, 21 January 2002
The coat of arms of Oplotnica can be blazoned as "Per fess or and azure in chief three grapes gules slipped sable and leaved vert and in base a mill whieel argent".
Oplotnica is located in a traditional vine growing region, thus
explaining inclusion of the grapes in the coat of arms.
Valt mentioned that the municipality wanted to have on its arms symbols of the river energy potential, as mills and saw have been powered by water for ages. This was symbolized with the mill wheel and waves. The authorship of the coat of arms is also claimed by a citizen of Oplotnica, who acted as the contact between the municipality and Heraldika d.o.o. However, both the idea and the drawing of the symbols are products by Valt and his company.
