The flag and coat of arms of Vitanje are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Vitanje, adopted on 26 September 1996 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 6, 7 February 1997, pp. 591-3, with effect on 21 February 1997.
The flag is based on the coat of arms. It is vertically divided wine red-white-wine red with the coat of arms in the middle.
The colours are prescribed as following:
- Wine red: RAL 3002 - field
- Light cream RAL 1015 - shells
- White (central field of the flag) and black (linings).

The coat of arms of Vitanje can be blazoned as follows "Purpure, three escallops proper".
The artistic rendition is copied from the coat of arms in the
Sts. Peter and Paul's parish church of Vitanje, on the right window
behind the altar. According to the legend, in unspecified long past
there was a lake in the valley of Vitanje community.
The coat of arms is described in the Decision in great detail, mainly
the measures in mm referring to the coat of arms on the aforementioned
window. To keep it simple, the coat of arms shall measure 99 x 116
mm.
The Decision on the municipal holiday Odlok o dolocitvi
obcinskega praznika Občine Vitanje, adopted on 6 July 1995 and
published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike
Slovenije, 42/1995, describes the coat of arms and its history.
It states, among others, that the coat of arms was that of the lords of
Vitanje, and that it was later taken up by the town of
Vitanje, in some unspecified time.
